LIU Brooklyn's Defense Proves Impenetrable in 7-3 NU Loss

3/18/2016 8:06:00 PM | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. – LIU Brooklyn turned a trio of rally-killing double plays to stifle hot Northwestern bats Friday night at the USF Clearwater Spring Break Tournament, allowing the Blackbirds to outpace the Wildcats, 7-3.

Northwestern now is 8-13 overall on the season while LIU Brooklyn is 11-16 after winnings its fifth game out of its last six. Northwestern returns to action tomorrow beginning at 8:15 a.m. CT/9:15 a.m. ET with two games against Lehigh and Kent State at the USF Clearwater Spring Break Tournament.

NU recorded 12 hits in the game and garnered 17 base runners total, but the Blackbirds defense was on point for largely the entire game. Meanwhile, four of the seven runs the Wildcats allowed ended up being unearned.

LIU Brooklyn got a pair of singles in the top of the first, but it was a couple of Northwestern errors that allowed the bulk of three unearned runs to come home, giving the Blackbirds a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

Northwestern found the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Anna Petersen, Brianna LeBeau and Caylor Arnold led off with consecutive singles to push pinch runner Fran Strub across the plate. The next batter put a ball in play on the infield and LeBeau tried to aggressively score on the underhand toss to first, but the Blackbirds were able to get a perfect relay for a rally-killing double play.

The Blackbirds seized on the play to start the top of the third with a walk, a double and two singles against NU starter Amy Letourneau, plating two more runs to extend their lead out to four, 5-1.

In the bottom of the third, LIU Brooklyn starter Tallie Woodson hit Krista Williams with the first pitch she threw, and the Blackbirds promptly put ace Erynn Sobieski into the circle. A tremendous diving play on the infield took a single away from Andrea Filler, but Letourneau followed with a single to put two on with one out. Sammy Nettling, however, crushed a line drive directly at the first baseman that went for an unassisted inning-ending double play.

Northwestern strung together yet another rally in the bottom of the fourth when LeBeau reached on an error and Arnold recorded her second single, but LIU Brooklyn turned its THIRD double play of the first four innings to again thwart the Wildcats.

While the Blackbirds held off the #B1GCats rallies, they were able to finish off their own. In the fifth, with freshman Kaley Winegarner in the circle, another unearned run came home for LIU Brooklyn on a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-1 game. NU finally broke through for a crooked number in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with leadoff singles from Sabrina Rabin and Williams. Rabin scored on a Filler single that saw a ridiculous throw from right cut down Williams at third, but with two outs Sammy Nettling delivered a single to bring Filler around and cut the deficit to 6-3.

Junior Nicole Bond took the circle in the sixth, but the first batter hit a solo home run before Bond was able to bear down and finish off the frame with a trio of weak ground balls and NU trailing by four, 7-3.

Kristen Wood tossed a scoreless top of the seventh as the fourth NU hurler, then Filler started the bottom of the seventh with a ground rule double. Letourneau followed with an absolute smash, but right at the shortstop who leapt to catch it. With two outs, LeBeau annihilated a liner to center -- right at the fielder. That proved to be a microcosm of the game as a whole, which finished with NU falling, 7-3.

Letourneau (3-7) took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Winegarner tossed one innings, giving up an unearned run on a hit and a walk with one K, Bond had one inning with one run allowed on a hit and a walk, and Wood threw the final inning of relief.

Filler was 3-for-4 at the plate with the double, an RBI and a run, Rabin had two singles and Arnold was 2-for-2 at the plate.
