CATHEDRAL CITY, CALIF. – Northwestern held high-octane Oregon State to only singles Friday at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., but the Beavers hit 13 of them en route to a 5-3 win over the Wildcats.
Oregon State now is 12-1 on the season to extend its stellar start to the year while Northwestern falls to 5-5 with the loss. Northwestern returns to action at 5:30 p.m. CT/3:30 p.m. PT today against New Mexico State at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
It seemed that every hard-hit Oregon State ball found an NU glove, with several Wildcats making lunging, leaping or diving catches. It seemed every moreso that every ground ball found a hole, allowing the Beavers to plate five runs in the game on only singles.
For its part, Northwestern tallied just three hits but showed a patient approach at the plate that resulted in nine walks. The two teams combined to strand 22 on base.
Both teams came out hacking during a fast-paced, action-packed first inning that saw Northwestern take the early lead. Junior Krista Williams was hit by a one-out pitch to start the top-of-the-first rally, then came all the way around to score when senior Andrea Filler smoked a triple into the gap in right-center. Filler herself raced home when senior Amy Letourneau put a ball in play, staking the Wildcats to a 2-0 edge.
In the bottom of the first, Oregon State got a pair of one-out singles against the NU starter Letourneau before a spinny grounder found its way to Filler at short for a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Oregon State evened the contest, 2-2, in the bottom of the second on a two-out hit by pitch and an infield single. The next batter hit a deep fly ball to center field that sophomore Sabrina Rabin raced back on while fighting the sun before stumbling and falling to her knees to make a dramatic, inning-ending catch.
After hacking prodigiously the first trip through the order, Northwestern waited out Oregon State starter Bev Miller in the third. Filler, Letourneau, Anna Petersen and pinch-hitter Brianna LeBeau all drew walks, with LeBeau's forcing Filler home to put the Wildcats back on top, 3-2.
Oregon State rallied with five more singles in the bottom of the third, two of which were simple poorly hit balls that NU fielders couldn't charge fast enough. The Beavers got two runs out of the rally to take a 4-3 lead, leaving the bases loaded for the second time in as many innings when Alcy Bush gloved a smashed liner right at her at first base.
Northwestern stranded two base runners in each of the fourth and fifth innings. After Petersen led off the fifth with her third walk of the game, Oregon State entered Meehra Nelson into the circle in relief of Miller. Nelson successfully kept NU from scoring, then the Beavers 12th single of the contest in the bottom of the frame extended their cushion to 5-3.
Letourneau had a fairly uneventful sixth inning trip through the heart of the Oregon State order, giving Northwestern a shot at a comeback in the top of the seventh. Petersen led off with her fourth walk of the game, but NU was unable to get anything else going for a final rally.
Letourneau (2-3) went the entire game, giving up five runs on 13 hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Filler led NU at the plate with two hits including a triple, two runs and an RBI. Petersen walked in all four of her plate appearances.
