Letourneau's School-Record Eight RBIs Lead NU Past NMSU, 12-4 (6)

CATHEDRAL CITY, CALIF. – Senior Amy Letourneau tied the Northwestern single-game record with eight RBIs as part of a three-hit, two-home run day to lead the Wildcats to a 12-4 (6) run-rule victory over New Mexico State at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Northwestern plays a doubleheader tomorrow at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, facing No. 8 Georgia at noon CT/10 a.m. PT before playing No. 20 Fresno State immediately after.
Letourneau unleashed a three-run home run in the first inning, a two-run single in the fourth and another three-run home run in the sixth. Her eight RBIs tie the NU single-game record held by Kelly Dyer, Tammy Williams and Erin Dyer.
Her two home runs in the game give her five on the year and 34 for her career, tying her with Kristen Amegin (2003-06) for eighth on NU's all-time list.
Northwestern starter Kaley Winegarner stranded a pair of Aggies in scoring position in the top of the first, then the Wildcats offense pounced immediately. Sophomore Sabrina Rabin first reached on an error followed quickly by a Krista Williams single. One out later, senior Amy Letourneau got all of an offering and sent it with a smack over the fence in left-center for a three-run #B1GCats dinger. Then, with two outs, senior Aubrie May sent a ball over the fence in dead center for a solo shot and a 4-0 Northwestern lead.
May, who has spent much of her time at Northwestern battling back from injury, enjoyed the first round trip of her career.
Winegarner had a 1-2-3 top of the second, then New Mexico State elected to insert Kayla Green in the circle in relief of starter Karysta Donisthorpe to start the bottom half. Rabin singled to start the frame and stole second, but the new pitcher fanned the next three Wildcats to the plate.
In the fourth, New Mexico State cut real deep into the Northwestern lead with a three-run home run of its own. The Aggies continued to rally after the blast, but Filler reached down and gloved a line drive to short to start a double play and end the frame.
NU took offense to the runs and brought its offense out in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Williams reached on an error before Andrea Filler pounded a two-out ground-rule double that one-hopped over the fence to prevent Williams from scoring on the play. Still, with two Wildcats in scoring position, Letourneau ripped a single back through the middle to score them both and make it a 6-3 game.
The Aggies got a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, but the Wildcats struck back in a big way in the bottom half to put this one away early. Rabin drew a leadoff walk, then moved to third when Williams blasted a ball through the middle. Williams ended up on second with a double when she never stopped running and NMSU failed to cover the bag. After Filler reached on an error that allowed Rabin to scamper home, Letourneau uncorked her second third-run home run of the contest to break it wide open, 10-4.
The game-ending rally continued right away with an Anna Petersen walk. Abbey Boyd came in to run for her, and motored all the way around to score when May doubled to left. Brooke Marquez singled May to third, then pinch hitter Brianna LeBeau put a ball in play to second that was deep enough to score May, ending the game.
Winegarner (2-0) got the win, going 4.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with a strikeout. Wood got her first save of the year with 2.0 innings of work, giving up a run on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.
In addition to Letourneau's big day, May also had a career contest at the plate, falling just a triple shy of the cycle. She drove in two and scored twice. Williams scored three runs while Rabin and Filler each scored twice.
Filler had a double in the game to extend her hitting streak to start the year to 11 games. She has at least one extra-base hit in 10 of NU's 11 games in 2016 including the last nine in a row.
