EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern makes its 12th trip to college softball's biggest party—the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic—this weekend, Feb. 26-28, for a five-game schedule against opponents with a combined 45-6 overall record so far in 2016.
Northwestern will open Friday against Oregon State (10-1) and New Mexico State (9-2) before playing a trio of top-20 teams: No. 8 Georgia (9-0) and No. 20 Fresno State (10-0) on Saturday, and No. 11 UCLA (7-3) Sunday.
The MNCC (formerly the Cathedral City Classic and the Palm Springs Classic) is hosted across five fields at the Big League Dreams Park in Cathedral City, and annually attracts ESPN crews, vendors of all shapes and sizes, alumni of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) and the nation's top collegiate programs. This year, FloSoftball will produce live video streams of every game available with a premium subscription.
The Nutter Classic has grown so large that it was split into two weekends this year. Last weekend saw 19 teams participate while 29 programs will descend on the desert for this weekend's festivities.
Last Friday, Andrea Filler was named one of 30 nationwide candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, given annually to a senior student-athlete who excels in character, the classroom, the community and in competition. It has been her play in competition this year that is opening eyes. Through nine games, Filler is batting .552 and slugging 1.241 on the strength of 11 extra-base hits. She has driven in 16 total and ranks among the top-10 in the nation in doubles (4th), slugging (6th), RBIs (8th) and home runs (9th).
On the other end of the seniority spectrum, freshmen pitchers Kaley Winegarner and Kenzie Ellis each earned their first career victories last Saturday at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Winegarner tossed a complete-game three-hitter, retiring the final 13 batters she faced against Boston College while Ellis went 2.2 innings of strong relief to position NU for a walk-off home run in a win over North Carolina.
