YOUNG AT HEART
Northwestern enters the Big Ten Conference Championships with a young roster. Eleven Northwestern freshmen will participate in their first conference championships.
Carter Page, who earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors twice this season, will be featured in the 500 free and 1,000 free events. Page turned in a season-best time of 4:31.91 for the 500 free against Missouri on Nov. 7. The Sarasota, Fla. native also recorded Northwestern's top time in the 1,000 free (9:22.23) against Notre Dame on Jan. 16.
Redshirt freshman Anthony Marcantonio will also be swimming in his first Big Ten Conference Championships. Marcantonio had a strong end to the dual season, picking up first-place finishes in the 200 free and the 200 IM against Notre Dame (Jan. 16), Iowa (Jan. 23) and Minnesota/Purdue (Jan. 29). He holds top times in 200 free (1:39.62) and 200 IM (1:49.41).
LEAN ON ME
With such a young roster, coach Schroeder will lean on sophomores Almg Olshtein and Nick Petersen for guidance and leadership of their younger teammates.
Olshtein, who has been a mainstay on Northwestern's relay teams, got his first taste of the Championships last year when he helped Northwestern to a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay with the third-best time in school history (1:25.93). This season, Olshtein has been the Wildcats top swimmer the 50 free. He posted a time of 20.41 in the event against Iowa on Jan. 23.
Petersen, who swims in the backstroke and butterfly events, will look to build on his impressive Conference Championships debut last season. In 2015, Petersen popped a career-best NCAA `B' cut time of 47.62 in the 100 fly, placing him 15th overall and in the scoring consolation final. It was the fifth-fastest time in school history.
In addition to the fly events, keep an eye out for Petersen in the 400-medley relay. In Northwestern's last meet, Petersen teamed up with Andy Jovanovic, Will Hofstadter and Olshtein to swim a time of 3:20.64, the second fastest time for the 'Cats this season.
THE COMPETITION
Ten member institutions of the conference will be represented at the Championships this week. Half of the squads are ranked in the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) dual meet poll, led by No. 5 Michigan. Indiana (No. 9), Ohio State (No. 15), Wisconsin (No. 16) and Minnesota (No. 25) also appear in the rankings.
LOOKING BACK
At the 2015 Big Ten Conference Championships, Jordan Wilimovsky won the 1,650 freestyle in dominating and record-breaking fashion on the final day of the conference meet. Wilimovsky swam an incredible NCAA `A' automatic qualification time of 14:33.50, breaking his own Northwestern school record, the Iowa pool record and -- most importantly -- earn his first-career Big Ten championship and the first for Northwestern since 2008.
Wilimovsky is currently training for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
