EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern opens up its 2016-17 Big Ten Conference season Tuesday when it travels to Penn State. Tip time is set for 2 p.m. Central.
Northwestern is riding an eight-game winning streak and has held each of those eight opponents below 70 points. NU has won its last 18 games in the month of December. The 'Cats won their last four December games in 2014 before going 8-0 in the month last year and 6-0 so far this year.
The Wildcats wrapped up nonconference play with a 72-63 win over Houston Baptist last Thursday, rallying back from a 12-point deficit. Scottie Lindsey scored a game-high 19 points for Northwestern and the 'Cats held the Huskies to 28.6 percent shooting in the second half.
Northwestern is 2-1 in Big Ten openers under head coach Chris Collins, including an 81-72 comeback win at Nebraska last season behind a 28-point, 12-rebound effort off the bench from Dererk Pardon.
Northwestern is opening its conference season by playing four of its first five games on the road. This is the first time since the 1955-56 season that the Wildcats are opening their Big Ten season with four of their first five league games away from Evanston.
Northwestern and Penn State split their season series a year ago with Penn State winning 71-62 Jan. 16 in Evanston and NU posting a 71-61 victory March 3 in University Park. The Wildcats have emerged victorious in their last three trips to Penn State.
