NAPA, Calif. -- Northwestern and Washington played to a tie Wednesday in the third-place match of the Gifford Collegiate at Silverado Resort and Spa.
Of the six matches members of the Wildcats and Huskies played, each team won two by identical and offsetting margins, and the remaining two matches were halved. The contest was the culmination of a tournament featuring 36 holes of medal play and three subsequent matches -- a format that mirrors the NCAA Championships.
No. 14 USC defeated No. 6 Stanford in the championship match, while No. 30 Colorado won the fifth-place match to finish just behind Washington and No. 36 Northwestern.
Ryan Lumsden and Andrew Whalen were winners for the Wildcats in Wednesday's match. Lumsden built a 2-up lead and held on for a 1-up victory, while Whalen went ahead for good on the 10th hole of his match before winning the 16th to help put away a 2 and 1 result.
Dylan Wu saw a 3-up advantage with five holes to play evaporate, but he held on with a par on No. 18 to halve his match. Meanwhile, Conor Richardson won the 18th hole to also halve.
Everton Hawkins (1up) and Sam Triplett (2 and 1) lost their matches by identical margins as NU's victories, negating the holes won tiebreaker and ending the team match in a tie.
Northwestern's fall season now is complete; the #B1GCats return to competition February 10-11 at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Coast, Fla.
Third-Place Match vs. Washington (T, 2-2-2)
Wu (NU) vs. Lee (WASH), halved
Garber (WASH) defeats Triplett (NU), 2 and 1
Lumsden (NU) defeats Pereira (WASH), 1 up
Yuan (WASH) defeats Hawkins (NU), 1 up
Richardson (NU) vs. List (WASH), halved
Whalen (NU) defeats Warkentin (WASH), 2 and 1
