EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern takes its 2-0 record to Indianapolis on Wednesday as the Wildcats square off with Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Tip time is set for 6 p.m. Central.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games which is an annual series between the Big Ten and BIG EAST Conferences and named in honor of Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. The series is in its second year and will span eight years with games being played on home sites.
The 'Cats are facing a quick turnaround after earning an 86-72 home win over Eastern Washington on Monday. Vic Law set a career high in scoring for the second straight game, posting a game-high 26 points to lead five Northwestern players in double figures.
Law has enjoyed a solid return to the Northwestern attack after missing all of the 2015-16 campaign due to injury. In NU's season-opener against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 11, Law connected on 7 of 10 field goal attempts and scored a career-high 18 points with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. He followed up the performance by posting a career best again with 26 points in a Nov. 14 victory over Eastern Washington. Through two games he is shooting 60.9 percent from the field (14-23), including 75.0 percent (6-8) from 3-point range.
Starting Wednesday, each of the Wildcats' next three opponents appeared in last year's NCAA tournament. After Wednesday's game, Northwestern remains on the road as it travels to Brooklyn for a pair of games in the Legends Classic next Monday and Tuesday.
Junior guard and Greensburg, Indiana, native Bryant McIntosh enters play Wednesday with 374 career assists, five shy of tying Shawn Watts for third place in school history. McIntosh set a school single-season record with 213 assists during the 2015-16 campaign.
One year after finishing sixth in the nation with a 1.59 assist-to-turnover ratio, Northwestern has picked up right where it left off. Through two games, the Wildcats have dished out 38 assists while committing only 18 turnovers. NU handed out 17 assists with only 5 turnovers against Eastern Washington.
