Purdue leads after shooting second-best team score in tournament history

GLENCOE, Ill. -- Andrew Whalen (Ephrata, Wash./Ephrata Senior) is one shot off the individual lead and Northwestern sits in third place among the 14-team field at the 19th Windon Memorial Classic following the opening day of 36-hole action Sunday at Lake Shore Country Club.

Play was suspended due to darkness with one group representing three teams still on the course. First round results are official while second round results remain unofficial until the final group holes out Monday morning. Current standings at the moment play was suspended can be found in the Golfstat link to the left of this text.

Sunday began with overcast conditions and humidity so thick it produced brief bouts of mist before giving way to brilliant sunny skies later in the afternoon. The bonus sunlight was not enough to sustain the completion of the second round, however.

Among those who did finish play Sunday, Purdue's Stuart Macdonald holds the individual lead by one stroke after firing rounds of 68-67 to stand at 7-under par 135. That total ties the tournament 36-hole scoring record set in 2003 by Purdue's Pete Richardson and matched by Matt Hoffman (Illinois) in 2008 and Jose Mendez (Minnesota) in 2014.

Macdonald and his teammates Brian Carlson (second-round 67), Luis Fernando Barco (second-round 69) and Austin Eoff (second-round 69) combined to card the second-best single round in Windon Memorial history with an afternoon 12-under 272. That total helped the Boilermakers build an eight-shot team lead over second-place Michigan with a 15-under 553 (281-272), which also is the second-best 36-hole total in tournament history.

The Wildcats are four strokes behind the Wolverines in third position at 3-under 565 (284-281), four shots ahead of a fourth-place tie between UC Davis and Ohio State.

Whalen is just one shot off Macdonald's pace at 6-under 136 (69-67) after a second-round 4-under 67. In the morning, Whalen stormed out early with three-straight birdies, but the course chipped away at his red number until he stood level par once again after 12 holes. Birdies at the short 520-yard par-5 13th and the long 482-yard par-4 16th got him back to 2-under 69 following the morning action.

In the afternoon, Whalen had two early bogeys before responding with a birdie on No. 7 and an eagle at the par-5 ninth after bombing his second shot nearly 300 yards onto the putting surface. Making the turn at 1-under, Whalen went birdie-birdie-birdie from holes 13 through 15 to end on 67.

His 136 is tied with the 2011 performance of Arkansas' Ethan Tracey's for the fifth-best 36-hole total in tournament history.

Sophomore Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) birdied both of the front nine par fives in the morning to negate two early bogeys, turning at even par. Two more birdies against two more bogeys on the back side gave him an even-par 71 in the first round. He had a wild afternoon, making six birdies and five bogeys for a 1-under 70, placing him just outside the top-10 at 1-under 141 (71-70).

Graduate student Harley Abrams (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) fired a morning 1-over 72 with three bogeys and two birdies. He was 2-over on the round after 10 holes before playing the final eight in 1-under par. In the afternoon, Abrams had a two-birdie, two-bogey round for an even-par 71 to put him inside the top-20 at 1-over 143 (72-71).

Freshman Ryan Lumsden (London, England/Wellington College) had two birdies and two bogeys to turn at level par in his first-ever Windon Memorial, then carded one bogey at the lengthy 16th to card a first-round 1-over 72. In the second round, he was 1-under after a birdie at No. 13, but a bogey at the 15th and a double bogey on the finishing hole gave him a 2-over 73 and a 36-hole total of 3-over 145 (72-73).

Senior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) rounded out Northwestern's team lineup in the morning with a 6-over 77. He would finish the day at 8-over 150 (77-73) after improving four shots in the afternoon. In that second round, he found himself 2-under par through 11 holes before stumbling to the finish line.

Competing as individuals, Wildcats freshmen Luke Miller (Venetia, Pa./Homeschooled) and Pete Griffith (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) had strong mornings in their first-ever Windon Memorial Classic. Each opened with scores of 1-under 70, firing nearly identical rounds with three birdies and two bogeys. Griffith then caught fire in the afternoon, starting with three birdies in his first four holes en route to a 2-under 69. He stands among the top-10 at 3-under 139 (70-69).

Miller, meanwhile, had a second-round 8-over 79 to sit at 7-over 149 (70-79) after 36 holes of play.

Sophomore Sam Triplett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) also played as an individual, going 76-74 for an 8-over 150.
