'Cats Strike Twice in Win Over Rams

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Northwestern (5-1-1) scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Colorado State (1-4-1) 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Lagoon.
"Great result today in adverse conditions," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "We gave up a goal against the run of play and had the perfect response. We immediately came right back at them and put them under pressure. It did not take long to equalize and then get the go-ahead goal. I am very proud of the toughness and determination we showed."
After a scoreless first half in which the Wildcats held a slight 6-5 advantage in shots, the Rams opened scoring in the 60th minute of action. Rookie Hannah Gerdin nailed a shot from 20 yards out to the far post to give Colorado State an early 1-0 lead.
Chicago's Big Ten Team was quick to respond and NU drew a penalty kick just three minutes later. Junior Maria Grygleski capitalized on the set piece and found the back of the net for the equalizer.
The resilient 'Cats did not back down as freshman Brenna Lovera found a guarded Kourtney Scott who logged her first goal of the year with a shot to the lower right corner. Scott's 76th-minute goal proved to be the game winner as Northwestern closed out the weekend opener with a 2-1 win.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 13, when they face off against Pac-12 opponent Colorado. Kick off is set for 2 p.m. CST, and will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks (Mountain).
