NU Defeats Colorado to Close Non-Conference Slate

9/13/2015 4:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOULDER, Colo. – On the back of sophomore Michelle Manning's game-winning golden goal, Northwestern closed out its non-conference slate with a 1-0 overtime victory against Colorado on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.

"It was another great win on the road today," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "The conditions were brutal for us - high altitude and over 90 degrees. We called on a lot of people to share the workload and showed tremendous mental toughness to earn the win. I was very pleased with the number of chances we created, and our defense was air tight and did not concede much at all. It was a great result for us heading into Big Ten play."

The Wildcats' defense showcased another outstanding, lights-out performance as NU tallied its fifth shutout of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Clem recorded four saves on the day.

A Jennifer Korn corner kick set up Northwestern for a quality chance in the 31st minute of action. Freshman Hannah Davison picked up the ball inside the area and turned a powerful header in an attempt to put NU on the board, but Colorado keeper Katie Scheele made the save to keep the game scoreless through the first frame.

Junior Addie Steiner took the first opportunity in the second half for the Wildcats' as she shuffled around three Colorado defenders and took an open shot on goal, but her attempt went just wide.

With eight seconds of regulation, fifth-year senior Niki Sebo attempted a one-touch shot for the game-winning goal, but a CU defender attacked with a slide tackle and cleared the ball to send the match into overtime.

Both teams produced opportunistic chances in the first overtime period, but it was the Wildcats who prevailed. Steiner crossed a ball to Manning who dribbled around two defenders and slipped in the game-winning goal past the outstretched arms of Scheele in the 97th minute.

The Wildcats kick off conference play with a pair of road games at Purdue and Indiana. Chicago's Big Ten Team will face off against the Boilermakers on Friday, Sept. 18, before the Hoosiers on Sunday.
