IOWA CITY, Iowa – Northwestern women's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to five games after a 1-1 draw at No. 11 Iowa in its Big Ten opener on Friday night.
In a physical first half that saw 10 fouls between both teams, NU held a slight 4-2 advantage in shots, with neither team able to generate many quality chances.
Northwestern (4-1-3, 0-0-1 Big Ten) broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, when a streaking Megan Norkett found Alex Fallon in a dangerous spot in the Iowa 18-yard box. Fallon slotted home Norkett's cross to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead and put Northwestern on the board first for the seventh time in eight games this season. Fallon's goal snapped a 621 minute and 29 second shutout streak from Iowa, dating back to the Hawkeyes' 3-2 loss to No. 7 TCU on Aug. 22.
First-year goalkeeper Nyamma Nelson posted three saves in the effort, making it her sixth game this season with three or more saves.
Northwestern earned a result against a ranked opponent in back-to-back games for the first time since Oct. 23-30, 2022, when it defeated No. 17 Ohio State and No. 20 Rutgers in consecutive games.
The Wildcats will continue their road swing to open conference play with a trip west next weekend. NU will play at Washington on Thursday, Sept. 19 before traveling to Oregon on Sunday, Sept. 22.
