Northwestern Opens Big Ten Play at No. 11 Iowa

9/11/2025 3:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – Coming off a top-five road win, Northwestern women's soccer opens up Big Ten play as it travels to Iowa City for a matchup with No. 11 Iowa on Friday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. CT on B1G+.

Last time out, the Wildcats (4-1-2, 0-0-0 Big Ten) knocked off No. 4 TCU, 1-0, for the highest ranked road win in program history and first top-five win since defeating No. 3 UCLA, 1-0, on Aug. 29, 2010. Kennedy Roesch's seventh-minute goal stood as the game-winner as NU controlled the game, outshooting the Horned Frogs 11-6. The loss was TCU's first at home since Aug. 20, 2023, when it fell 2-0 to No. 6 Florida State. The Horned Frogs were unbeaten in their last 18 games at home (15-0-3) and had won seven straight on their turf.

Big Ten Freshman of the Week Nyamma Nelson posted her fourth shutout in the win, the third-most by a first-year goalkeeper in program history.

Also earning a weekly conference honor, Brooke Miller was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, anchoring the back line in a standout performance. Miller and the Wildcats' defense limited TCU to just six shots, its fewest in a game since Nov. 18, 2022 vs. Michigan State (six).  Alex Fallon and Liz Cardwell lead the 'Cats and rank sixth in the Big Ten with three assists each, making Northwestern one of only three Big Ten teams to have multiple players with three or more assists (Iowa, Nebraska).

Northwestern has scored first in six of its seven games, and is 4-0-2 this season when scoring first. NU has posted a clean sheet in each of its four wins.

Thursday's game will mark the 29th meeting in program history between the 'Cats and Hawkeyes. NU leads the all-time series 16-10-2. Iowa claimed last season's meeting 2-1 in Evanston, while NU won 2-1 in the last meeting in Iowa City in 2023.

No. 11 Iowa (5-1-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) enters Big Ten play averaging 2.29 goals per game and allowing 0.71 goals per game. Reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Kelli McGroarty leads the Hawkeyes with four goals on the season. Goalkeepers Taylor Kane and Fernanda Mayrink have split time in net this season for the Hawkeyes.

The Wildcats will continue their road swing in Big Ten play when they travel to Washington on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 9 p.m. CT on B1G+.
