NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- On Monday of this week, freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) was sitting in class, Northwestern's season over after narrowly missing the NCAA Regionals.
Then, he received a text message from head coach David Inglis.
Six days later Wu nearly pulled off the incredible, ultimately falling one stroke shy of advancing to the NCAA National Championships following an outstanding New Haven Regional that concluded Saturday with a final round 1-under 69 to give him a fifth-place 3-under 207 (68-70-69) at The Course at Yale.
"Ugh, the agony of missing it by one stroke," Inglis tweeted. "Played great again today."
Wu was the first alternate for one of 45 individual slots across six Regionals following the NCAA selection show, and gained entry when St. John's Dylan Crowley withdrew to play in a local U.S. Open qualifier at Bethpage State Park instead of the NCAA Tournament. Wu made the most of his opportunity, sitting in position for the Region's individual berth in the NCAA National Championships following an opening 2-under 68 Thursday and an even-par 70 Friday.
His closing 1-under 69 proved to be just a stroke shy in the end, putting him behind a tie between competitors from Ohio State and Troy. The individual berths at each of the six NCAA Regionals go to the top player not an advancing team.
Wu held a one-stroke edge in the race for the individual NCAA Championships berth based on the current leaderboard configuration when Saturday began. He teed off on the longer back nine and made birdie at the 225-yard par-3 13th before carding birdie for the third time in the tournament at the 553-yard par-5 16th. He gave a shot back at No. 17 on what would prove to be his lone bogey of the day.
After turning at 1-under par for the day and 3-under for the tournament, Wu knew he needed at least one more birdie coming home after both the Buckeye and the Trojan ahead of him signed for 4-under par totals. He posted par after par on his way home, but was unable to get the elusive final birdie.
Wu's fifth place finish among the 75-player New Haven Regional field put an exclamation point on the freshman's season that nobody saw coming just a week earlier.
