NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) is off to a tremendous start following Thursday's opening round at the NCAA New Haven Regional hosted by Yale at The Course at Yale, firing a 2-under 68 to sit in a second-place tie in the standings.
Though Northwestern did not qualify for the NCAA field as a team, Wu is carrying the Wildcats' banner impressively. The low individual not on an advancing team at the New Haven Regional will move on to the NCAA National Championships, and Wu occupies that spot on the leaderboard after 18 holes of play. His 68 is his eighth round in the 60s this year and his 11th total at par or better; just four golfers in the 75-man field cracked par on Thursday.
"This is a really good course," said Wu. "It's not super challenging, but you have to play it smart. You have to be patient."
The freshman made six total birdies on his round and had just a single bad error that lead to a double bogey at the 377-yard par-4 seventh hole. The Course at Yale has a unique 34-36 par-70 layout stretching across 6,803 yards. Despite the shorter yardage, the back nine features length in the form of a 215-yard par 3, a 225-yard par 3 and a finishing 621-yard par 5.
Wu went birdie-birdie at Nos. 2 and 3, draining a 20-foot putt at the second and stuffing a blind approach at the 411-yard par-4 third to inside of two feet. He added another birdie at the par-3 fifth hole before that double bogey at No. 7, which he immediately answered with a fourth front-side birdie at No. 8. Wu tapped in for par at No. 9 to complete an outward 2-under 32.
He began his back nine with a birdie at No. 10, but gave shots away at both long back side par-3s. In a big finishing stretch featuring two par 5s and the longest par 4 on the course, Wu birdied No. 16 before carding pars on the final two holes to complete his strong opening volley in the Regional.
Wu earned a berth in the NCAA Regional Championships field on the strength of his strong freshman season for the Wildcats that included medalist honors against a tough field at UCLA's Gifford Collegiate in the fall. He actually was the first alternate for one of 45 individual slots across six Regionals following the selection show, but gained entry earlier this week due to a withdrawal at the Yale site. So far, he is making the most of that opportunity.
