VALENCIA, Calif. -- Northwestern moved up a spot during Tuesday's final round of the Jones Invitational hosted by Pepperdine at the Valencia Country Club, finishing in third place among the 15-team field behind a pair of top-25 opponents.
The Wildcats fired a final-round 4-over 292 -- the third-best round of the day in the field -- to finish at 6-over 870 (288-290-292) for the event. Northwestern finished seven strokes ahead of a fourth-place tie between Sam Houston State and BYU, nine shots in front of host Pepperdine and 10 strokes ahead of seventh-place Winthrop, which had been in front of NU to begin the day but suffered a rough final round.
Northwestern trailed only second-place Kennesaw State by four strokes while USC won the tournament at 14-under par. The Trojans entered the event ranked fourth and the Owls ranked 22nd according to the most recent Golfstat.com list.
Northwestern is back in action quickly with its third tournament in three weeks March 2-3 at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La.
Junior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) led Northwestern's good final day with a 1-under 71 to jump up into a sixth-place tie, matching his season-best finish this year. He had two bogeys in his first four holes before firing off three-straight birdies from Nos. 4 through 6. Birdies on the back side at Nos. 11 and 13 got him to 3-under for his round. Though he suffered a double bogey at No. 15 and a bogey at No. 17, Jamieson still finished the round under par to move up into sixth at 1-under 215 (69-75-71).
Jamieson carded 14 birdies and two eagles in his 54 holes of play at the Jones Invitational. "I love that," tweeted NU Director of Golf and Player Development Pat Goss. "We can tidy up the rest."
Senior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) recovered from a tough second round Monday to have a pretty even keel Tuesday, making three birdies, three bogeys and nothing worse to finish at even-par 72 -- his second round at par or better for the tournament. Not only did his total help Northwestern rise in the team standings, it jumped him up 10 places to 23rd overall at 4-over 220 (71-77-72) for the event.
Freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) had three birdies on the front nine Tuesday, but a double bogey at the par-3 seventh had him turning at 1-under 35. His back nine began with bogeys on each of the first four holes, though he grabbed one stroke back with a birdie at the par-3 16th to finish the day at 2-over 74 and the tournament at 6-over 222 (76-72-74), good for 27th place.
Freshman Sam Triplett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) endured a 4-over par stretch from holes No. 6 through 8 on the front nine of his final round, but he recovered very nicely. He first made birdie at the par-4 10th hole to kick off the back side before another birdie at the 13th. He did give one stroke back late in the day, but still turned in a 1-under 35 on the back nine for a 3-over 75.
Triplett finished in 45th position at 10-over 226 (76-75-75).
After entering the final round in third place, freshman Charles Wang's (Beijing, China/Sarasota Christian School) day started poorly and did not get much better. He made bogey on the opening hole of a round that included two double bogeys and finished at 7-over 79. Still, Wang racked up a career-best 19th-place finish for his first-collegiate top-20 result.
