DURHAM, N.C. -- Resuming play with a 10 hole shootout Sunday morning at the weather-shortened Rod Myers Invitational, Northwestern shot three spots up the team standings to finish in the top half of the 12-team field at The Duke Golf Club.
The 54-hole tournament was shortened to 36 after weather cut Saturday's scheduled two rounds short and forecasts indicated more bad weather on the way. The Wildcats were halfway through their second loop Saturday and already had moved from t-9th after the first round into seventh position. When play resumed, NU sunk back down the standings before finishing with a birdie barrage at the 493-yard par-5 ninth hole to leap up to a sixth-place finish.
"(Weather is) much different this morning," Director of Golf and Player Development Pat Goss tweeted. "Opposite wind, much cooler and wet. We had a bad stretch on holes 4-7 but finished strong."
NU carded a 5-over 293 in the second and final round to land on 12-over 588 for the tournament, one stroke behind fifth-place Charlotte. NU's fellow Big Ten competitors Iowa and Michigan State finished four strokes behind the Wildcats in a seventh-place tie.
Freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) led Northwestern in the final round with a 1-under 71. He restarted Sunday at even-par through eight holes and remained on that number until a late birdie at the 173-yard par-3 eighth hole got him into red figures. Wu jumped 19 spots up the standings in the second round to place 23rd at 2-over 146 (75-71).
Senior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) also was even-par through eight holes prior to Sunday's restart. Two bogeys after the turn preceded one of Northwestern's three birdies as a team at No. 9, leading to a 1-over 73 for the round and a 4-over 148 (75-73) for the tournament, good for 33rd position.
Senior Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) started Sunday 2-over par through 10 holes and immediately went birdie-birdie on his first two holes, Nos. 2 and 3, to get back to even. He went on, however, to make three-consecutive bogeys from Nos. 5 through 7 before a birdie at No. 9 gave him an even-par 36 on a wild front nine and a 2-over 74 for the round. Negri ended up 27th overall at 3-over 147 (73-74).
Senior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) made eight pars Saturday in his second round before the interruption, then resumed with four more to begin his Sunday. He then went bogey-bogey-double bogey, though, from Nos. 4 through 6. He, too, birdied his final hole to get one stroke back and card a 3-over 75 for a 43rd-place 36-hole total of 7-over 151 (76-75).
Freshman Charles Wang (Beijing, China/Sarasota Christian School) was even-par when he came back to the course Sunday morning, but four bogeys and no birdies on his way home led to a 4-over 76. Wang had led NU in the first round, and ended up in 33rd place tied with Lavin at 4-over 148 (72-76).
Competing as an individual, senior Scott Smith (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) made a three-stroke improvement with his second-round score, carding a 4-over 76 to place 58th at 11-over 155 (79-76).
Northwestern now is off until concluding the fall season Nov. 3-5 at the Gifford Intercollegiate in San Martin, Calif.
