EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern student-athletes earned 64 Academic All-Big Ten honors in six spring and two at-large sports, the Big Ten Conference office announced today (May 29). Coupled with 97 accolades won in the fall and 42 more in the winter, a total of 203 Wildcats were named Academic All-Big Ten during 2012-13 to mark the third-straight year with over 200 awards for NU student-athletes.
Northwestern-sponsored sports honored by the Big Ten and recognized during the spring season are: baseball, men's golf, women's golf, softball, men's tennis and women's tennis. In addition, the Wildcats' women's fencing (which competes in the Midwest Conference) and women's lacrosse (which competes in the American Lacrosse Conference) squads also were honored.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Instituted beginning in 2008-09, the conference office also will hand out the Distinguished Scholar Award over the summer. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letter winners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The 3.7 GPA benchmark was designed to include the top 10 percent of all eligible student-athletes.
The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference's Academic All-Big Ten program. The recipients will be honored prior to the fall of 2013 based on their GPAs from the 2012-13 academic year.
