EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern enters the 2013 Big Ten Championships on the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Ind., as the top-seeded team in the field and fresh off a dominating victory in its last regular-season tournament.
The Wildcats, winners of two events in 2012-13, are in search of their fifth conference team title under 17-year head coach Pat Goss and first since 2006. NU has finished in the top three at the Big Ten Championships in each of the last three seasons, placing third in 2010 and 2012 while posting a runner-up performance in 2011.
Northwestern is the 28th-ranked teams in the country according to Golfstat.com, leading the field in front of second-seeded No. 35 Illinois and third-seeded No. 56 Iowa.
Leading the way for NU is junior Jack Perry, who is a two-time winner in 2013 and is ranked as the No. 56 player in the country according to Golfstat. He is the top ranked golfer in the field, leading No. 62 Thomas Pieters of Illinois and No. 88 Steven Ihm of Iowa.
Perry's victories both came in team triumphs for Northwestern at the season-opening Inverness Intercollegiate and the season-closing Northwestern Spring Invitational, where Perry broke Luke Donald and David Lipsky's school 54-hole tournament scoring record with a 16-under 200. Perry has a 71.33 stroke average this season and seven top-20 finishes in NU's nine stroke play events.
Senior Nick Losole has put together a very strong and steady season behind Perry, earning three top-5 finishes and five top-20 results while compiling an impressive 72.07 stroke average.
Further down the lineup, Northwestern has shown depth like never before this season. All eight rostered Wildcats have at least one round in the 60s this year and all but one have at least one top-12 finish. Sophomore Matthew Negri and freshman Josh Jamieson have played very well in the spring season to solidify spots in the team lineup while freshman Andrew Whalen has three top-20 finishes this year including a pair of 12th-place results in three spring events.
THE COURSE
The Pete Dye course, which was named America's Best New Public Course in 2009 by Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine, was carefully carved on a dramatic hilltop offering a variety of elevation changes, rugged and dramatic terrain, narrow fairways and challenging bunkers. The course, which maxes out an astonishing 8,102 yards with an 80.0 rating, will play to a 7,152-yard, par 72 layout for this tournament.
