EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) has been named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week after helping Northwestern to its third-consecutive Big Ten Match Play Championship title with a 4-0 record last weekend at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Chien is the third-straight Wildcat to win this honor following an NU victory at the Big Ten Match Play tournament. Classmate Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) won in 2010 and 2012 Asian Tour Q School champion David Lipsky won as a junior in 2009.
Chien's biggest win among his four at Concession was his first in Northwestern's opening round match against Penn State. With the score tied, 2-2, and NU trailing both matches left on the course through 14 holes, Chien fought back to give the Wildcats' a tiebreak victory. He first pitched in for a match-squaring eagle at the par-5 16th hole, then stiffed his approach at No. 17 for a go-ahead birdie in the 1-up win.
Chien then went on to post a 3 and 1 victory over Iowa in the quarterfinals, a 3 and 2 triumph against Ohio State in the semis and a final 2-up victory in the title match against Minnesota.
