EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will make its 26th all-time appearance in NCAA postseason play this year after earning the No. 10 seed at the May 19-21 Colorado National Regional to be held at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colorado.
The Wildcats have qualified for the NCAA Championships for the 12th time in head coach Pat Goss' 15-year tenure. NU has advanced out of Regional play to the NCAA National Championships six times under Goss, making its most recent appearance in 2009.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 19-21. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three Regionals (including Northwestern's) while the other three will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each Regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships.
Designed by Jay Morrish, Colorado National is a 7,676 yard, par-72 tract offering breathtaking panoramas of the Rock Mountains' northern Front Range. The finals will be conducted May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
The 13 teams at the Colorado National Regional are: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 12 Georgia, No. 13 Auburn, No. 25 Clemson, No. 35 Chattanooga, No. 40 TCU, No. 48 North Florida, No. 53 New Mexico State, No. 57 Northwestern, No. 63 Colorado State, No. 70 San Jose State and No. 118 Denver. Teams are listed in the order they are seeded for the Regional; rankings are from Golfstat.com.
Northwestern is the No. 10 seed in its Regional this year after entering the Championships as a Regional No. 9 seed in each of the previous two seasons. NU advanced to the NCAA National Championships from the ninth seed in 2009 at the South Central Regional hosted by Oklahoma State, finishing tied for fourth place to move on.
Northwestern's 2011 spring season was book-ended by strong showings. The Wildcats first defended their Big Ten Match Play Championship with their second-straight title in the event Feb. 11-12. NU then made a final-round charge at the Big Ten Championships April 30-May 1 that saw all five 'Cats in the lineup shoot even- or below-par to help NU charge into second place in the event.
At the Big Ten Championships, senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) shot a final-round 5-under 67 to finish third overall while junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) took 10th and sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) made it a trio of 'Cats in the top-20 with a 19th-place finish.
