ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern dropped a trio of decisions following the second day of a Big Ten quad dual meet hosted by Michigan. NU fell to No. 11 Ohio State (243-94), host No. 13 Michigan (288.5-63.5) and Penn State (176-167).
The meet began Friday afternoon with a single session. Saturday morning's action began with the 200 medley relay, which saw NU's top team of Dominik Cubelic (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves), Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) and Jake Grosser (St. Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) place sixth with a time of 1:32.00.
In the 500 free, Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie Schoo) and Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) were NU's top finishers in sixth and seventh places, respectively. Park swam a 4:34.36 while Rimkus turned in a time of 4:34.65.
Tyler then grabbed a third-place overall result in the 200 IM, placing in the middle of a tightly bunched 2-3-4 pack with a time of 1:48.83.
During the swimming action, freshman diver Nick Pinkerton (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) turned in an NU-season-best score of 255.70 on the 10-meter platform to place fourth overall in the event.
Mathews' 49.45 in the 100 fly placed him fifth as NU's top swimmer, then Varun Shivakumar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) took ninth overall to lead the Wildcats in the 200 back with a 1:50.90.
Northwestern's top four finishers in the 100 free touched the wall within .60 of a second of each other, resulting in a bunch of Wildcats at 10-through-13 in the overall standings. Cubelic led the way with a 46.29, followed by Grosser and Alexander Ratajczyk (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) with matching times of 46.75 and Ross McAuliffe (Shapwick, United Kingdom/Millfield School) with a 46.89.
Tyler's 56.46 in the 100 breast placed him fifth overall in the final individual event of the meet. NU's team of Cubelic, McAuliffe, Grosser and Mathews finished out the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay, ending up with a time of 1:23.65, which was not enough to negate a nine-point PSU victory against NU.
Northwestern now is off until the Big Ten Championships February 23-26 in Minneapolis, Minn.
