ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After one day of action in a two-day Big Ten quad-dual meet, Northwestern trails No. 11 Ohio State (124-56), No. 13 Michigan (151-35) and Penn State (100-86).
In the opening event of the meet, Northwestern's 400 medley relay team of Varun Shivakumar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd), Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves), Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) and Ross McAuliffe (Shapwick, United Kingdom/Millfield School) swam a 3:23.62 to come in eighth overall.
The Wildcats fared much better in the first individual event, the 1,000 free. Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) swam a fifth-place and season-best time of 9:21.86, narrowly missing out on fourth place after Ohio State's Ty Perkins blazed to a final 25.52 50-yard split to overtake him. Right behind Rimkus was NU senior Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School), who placed sixth overall with a 9:25.74 to give NU a 1-2 finish against Penn State.
Tyler and John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) came in eighth and ninth overall in the 200 free with times of 1:40.96 and 1:41.78, respectively. Dominik Cubelic (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) then was NU's top swimmer in the 50 free with a ninth-place time of 21.43.
At the midway point of Friday's action, divers Nick Pinkerton (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Tanner Nemkov (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) came in fifth and sixth overall on the 3-meter springboard. Pinkerton scored a 265.65 while Nemkov had a 261.40.
Cubelic again had NU's best finish with a ninth-place result in the 100 back, swimming a 50.70.
Tyler earned a fourth-place overall result in the 200 breast with a 2:02.86, then Mathews found the wall in fifth-place overall in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.05. Both of those results gave NU head-to-head event wins over Penn State.
Nemkov was the top diver on the 1-meter springboard with a 258.20 to place sixth overall, then Northwestern's team of Cubelic, McAuliffe, Alexander Ratajczyk (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) and Jake Grosser (St. Charles, Ill./Saint Charles) came in seventh in the 400 free relay with a 3:05.73, a mere .57 of a second behind the Nittany Lions' top team.
Action resumes tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. CT in Ann Arbor, Mich.
