OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- During a wet second round Saturday at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational that featured a more than three-hour weather delay, Northwestern slipped one spot in the team standings to 12th place in the 15-team field.
The Wildcats are at 22-over 582 (290-292) entering Sunday's final round, four strokes in front of 13th-place California and three shots behind 11th-place Indiana. As it did in Friday's first round, Northwestern again teed off from No. 10 and played the back nine first. Play was suspended at 10:45 a.m. due to lightning in the area, then resumed at 2 p.m. CT.
Junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) remained in the top-10 as an individual after posting a 2-over 72 in the second round. Chun is at even-par 140 (68-72) following 36 holes of play, good for a ninth-place tie. Chun was even-par on the back nine after sandwiching birdies around a double-bogey at No. 14. Three bogeys and a birdie on the front side gave him a 2-over 37 coming in.
Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) began his day with a 3-over 38 on the back nine before making his first birdie after the turn on No. 2. He unfortunately followed that up with a double-bogey at No. 4, contributing to a 1-over 36 on the front and a 4-over 74 total for his second round. Coupled with his 1-over 71 from Friday, Lipsky is 28th as an individual at 5-over 165 (71-74).
Sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) had a much improved day Saturday after a 9-over 79 Friday to start his tournament. Losole was 3-over after the first five holes Saturday, but played 1-under golf the rest of the way on three birdies and just two more bogeys for a 2-over 72. He is 65th in the field at 11-over 171 (79-72).
Senior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) had a rough bogey-double bogey start on his first two holes before a bogey on No. 18 put him at 4-over 39 at the turn. Dupont recovered with a birdie on No. 1, but another bogey-double bogey combination on Nos. 4 and 5 inflated his total to 6-over through 14 holes.
Unlike on Friday, when Dupont followed a back-nine 39 with a front-nine 40, he recovered to make birdie on both Nos. 7 and 8 for an even-par 35 coming in and a 4-over 74 on Saturday. He now is 69th in the field at 13-over 173 (79-74).
Freshman Brad Shigezawa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou Academy) rounded out Northwestern's day Saturday with a 7-over 77, placing him 56th individually at 9-over 169 (72-77) after 36 holes of play. Shigezawa made a pair of birdies on the back nine, but two double bogeys and five other bogeys in his round moved his score upward.
The final round of the three-day tournament takes place tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 19. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
