WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Playing in nasty conditions and through several weather delays, Northwestern maintained its position in the field Sunday while finishing the second round and contesting the third to place sixth at the 2010 Boilermaker Invitational.
The Wildcats fired a 54-hole total of 26-over 890 (293-296-301), two strokes in front of seventh-place Iowa in the 12-team field. NU was eight shots behind fifth-place Toledo. All but one team finished over par in the tournament.
After the second round, which was completed Sunday morning following a weather suspension Saturday afternoon, Northwestern stood in sixth place, one stroke ahead of Indiana and one shot behind Miami (Ohio). The third round also was interrupted by rain for a spell before the teams were able to complete the entire tournament.
Sophomore Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) led the way for Northwestern with an 11th-place individual finish at 4-over 220 (71-75-74). Chun paced the entire field in par-4 scoring during the tournament, playing those holes on the 7,210-yard Kampen Course in 6-under par. He was fourth overall among all individuals with 11 total birdies on the weekend.
Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) joined Chun in the top-20 with a total of 6-over 222 (73-75-74). He was very consistent over his entire tournament, recording the fourth-best number of total pars among the field with 37.
Senior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) recovered from an opening-round 79 to go under par in his second round, carding a team-best 1-under 71. He concluded the tourney with a 3-over 75 to place 29th overall at 9-over 225 (79-71-75). Bowers was one of six players in the entire field to play the par-3 holes under par (-1).
Junior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and freshman Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) both took 44th overall as individuals at 13-over 229 (76-75-78 for Dupont and 73-78-78 for Losole). Losole also had 37 pars on the weekend, joining Lipsky among the tourney's leaders in that category.
Northwestern returns to action April 30-May 2 at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.
