RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- One day after jumping three spots in the team standings at the 2010 Puerto Rico Classic, Northwestern surged again during the final round Tuesday to leap three more places and finish fourth in the very strong 15-team field.
The Wildcats fired a 3-under 285 on Tuesday, which enabled them to catch every team that was conceivably catchable entering the final round. Northwestern broke free of its seventh-place tie with host Purdue to jump over No. 11 Georgia Tech, No. 17 Georgia and No. 36 Kent State, finishing with a 54-hole total of 11-under 853 (290-278-285). The 'Cats ended up 10 shots behind third place No. 28 Clemson and two shots in front of fifth-place Georgia Tech.
No. 10 Texas won the tournament with an incredibly low 42-under 822, followed by No. 1 Oklahoma State at 36-under 828.
The result showed stellar team play for Northwestern, which did not have a single team member finish in the top-10 and had only one in the top-20 individually. Three different Wildcats fired rounds of 4-under 68 on three different days, and the squad combined for 11 scores of even-par or better. When one 'Cat had a rough day, the other members picked him up to enable NU's strong finish.
Sophomore Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) led the final round charge with a 4-under 68, a vast improvement over his first two scores in the tournament. He ended up with 32nd position in the individual standings at 1-over 217 (78-71-68).
Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada), who concluded the first two days of competition in the top 10, fired a final-round even-par 72 to finish 13th overall with a 6-under 210 (68-70-72). Lipsky's 6-under total is his career-best effort at a tournament in relation to par, topping the 5-under he notched at this year's 36-hole Navy Fall Classic and the 56-hole 2008-09 Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
Sophomore Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) also had an even-par 72 on Tuesday, putting him in 42nd overall at 3-over 219 (78-69-72).
Senior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio./Bishop Watterson) shot a 1-over 73 in the final 18 holes to round out Northwestern's scoring on Tuesday. He finished 25th individually with an even-par 216 (72-71-73).
One day after matching NU's low round in the tournament (68), junior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) shot a 4-over 76 to fall into a tie for 25th place with Bowers at even-par 216 (72-68-76).
Northwestern returns will take the remainder of winter quarter off before returning to action March 25-26 at the Barona Collegiate Cup in San Diego, Calif.
