EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern concludes its fall season next week, Nov. 8-10, at the sixth-annual Gifford Collegiate Championship hosted by UCLA at the CordeValle Resort in San Martin, Calif.
NU is one of 12 teams that comprise a very strong field at the Gifford. Those schools are: No. 3 UCLA, defending NCAA champion No. 5 Augusta State, No. 16 Stanford, No. 24 San Diego, No. 25 Washington, No. 26 USC, No. 35 Northwestern, No. 47 Oklahoma, Arizona, Lamar, Long Beach State and Oregon. Rankings are from Golfstat.com.
While most collegiate tournaments feature lineups of five players with the top four scoring for their teams, the Gifford is a play six, score five format. Those competitors will attack the par 72, 7,169-yard CordeValle Resort golf course.
Northwestern is coming off a fifth-place finish at the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, which featured one of the best individual performances in school history. Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) played the final four holes of the tournament in five-under par to make a late charge and tie for medalist honors. He matched Luke Donald's school-record 54-hole total of 14-under 202 with the effort, which was the 2010 Big Ten individual champion's third-career collegiate victory.
While the Wildcats still are searching for day-to-day consistency in the lineup, four different players (Lipsky, Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School), Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame)) all had at least one round under par at the Bridgestone, while a fifth -- Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) -- turned in an even-par score at the event.
Following the Gifford, Northwestern is off for the winter until opening its spring schedule February 11-12 at the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
