DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Poway) both fired career-best rounds of 4-under 67 during Friday's first round of the FAU Spring Break Championship, finishing day one in fifth place in the individual standings. Bowers' total helped Northwestern to fourth place in the team race after the first round while Dupont is competing in the tournament as an individual.
Northwestern turned in a team score of 2-over 286 during the first round on the Legends Course at Gleneagles Country Club, which is playing as a par-71 setup for this tournament. NU is three strokes behind third-place Eastern Michigan and one strike in front of fifth-place Michigan. Illinois leads the 14-team field with a 7-under 277.
Bowers recorded five birdies against just one bogey during his round, playing the front in 1-under before coming in with a 3-under tally on the back. He birdied all three par-5's on the course. His previous career-best total was a 69, earned during both the 2007 Windon Memorial and the 2008 Notre Dame Spring Break Championship.
Dupont began his round on fire, recording birdies on three of the first five holes. He birdied four holes on the front nine and one on the back against just one bogey for the entire round. Dupont's previous career-best score was a 3-under 69 during the final round of the 2007 Windon Memorial.
Both Bowers's and Dupont's scores of 67 and 4-under par totals are season bests for Northwestern.
Not to be outdone, senior Andy DeKeuster (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) matched his career-best total with a 2-under 69 to finish the first day in ninth place. He coupled four birdies with two bogies to equal the 3-under 69 he fired at the 2007 CordeValle Collegiate.
Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) is in 32nd place after a first-round total of 3-over 74. Lipsky had a tough stretch on the front nine, playing the seventh and eighth holes in a combined 3-over par before playing even-par golf on the back side.
Junior Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) rounded out Northwestern's scoring Friday with a 5-over 76. Freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) is competing with the Wildcats' team squad as well, turning in an 8-over 79.
Also competing as an individual, freshman Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) is in 26th place after firing a first-round score of 2-over 73. Chien began on the back nine with a birdie, but three-straight bogeys on holes 16, 17 and 18 put him at 3-over. He then played the front in 1-under par.
