OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Northwestern jumped three places during the second round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational Saturday, firing the second-best team score of the day with a 5-over 285.
The Wildcats moved three places into 12th position, climbing over Purdue, SMU and Duke. Northwestern has a 33-over 593 (308-285) for the tournament entering tomorrow's final round, two strokes better than 13th-place Duke and one stroke behind 11th-place Central Florida. Oklahoma State turned in a 1-over 281 Saturday to take a one-stroke lead in the tournament with a 12-over 572.
Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) paced Northwestern Saturday with a 2-under 68. Lipsky carded five birdies -- four on the back nine -- and three bogies during his round. Joining Lipsky under par was freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School), who finished with a 1-under 69. Chun, who started on the back nine, fired three-straight birdies on holes 16-18 before making the turn.
Lipsky now is tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard with a 4-over 144 after his 68 tied for the second best score of the day. Chun is in 23rd position with a 6-over 146 through two rounds.
Junior Matt Denison (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) began his round with two birdies in his first four holes on the back nine, eventually carding a 2-over 72 with four birdies and six bogies.
Sophomore Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) recovered from a difficult first day to contribute a 6-over 76 on day two. Patel played much improved golf for the majority of the round, earning three birdies and five bogeys before a quadruple bogey on the final hole.
The final round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 21. Live results are available at www.golfstat.com.
