GLEN ELLYN, Ill. -- Three Wildcats qualified Monday for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst by sweeping the top three spots at the Glen Ellyn, Ill., Sectional Qualifier.
Rising juniors Matt Denison (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) along with rising sophomore Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) earned three of the four slots awarded at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn qualifier, which featured a field of 90 competitors.
Lipsky won the 36-hole event with a 6-under par 138, while Denison and Patel both tied for second with scores of 2-under 142. Lipsky fired a second-round 5-under 67 to run away from the field.
Northwestern has a strong history in the U.S. Amateur, most recently with 2006 graduate Dillon Dougherty making it all the way to the Sunday 36-hole match play final in 2005. He finished second, earning trips to the U.S. Open and the Masters. Northwestern alum Charles "Chick" Evans Jr. won the event in 1916 and 1920, playing in an inapproachable record 50-consecutive Amateur Championships.
The 2008 U.S. Amateur takes place August 18-24 at Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 in Pinehurst, N.C.
