NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Sophomore David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) won co-medalist honors Saturday at the 36-hole Notre Dame Spring Invitational at Warren Golf Course, leading Northwestern to a first-place finish in the nine-team, one-day tournament.
Lipsky fired a 1-under 139 on the 6,930 yard, par-70 course, turning in a 2-under 68 in the first round before finishing with a 1-over 71 in the second. The tournament win is the first in his career.
Lipsky tied with Notre Dame's Eddie Peckels for medalist honors after darkness set in before a playoff could begin. Saturday's 9 a.m. shotgun start was delayed an hour by frost.
As a team, Northwestern won the tournament with an 8-over 568, comprised of an 8-over 288 in the first round before carding the best team round of the day with an even par 280 in the second. The Wildcats finished two strokes ahead of tournament host Notre Dame, which held a six-stroke lead over NU after the first round.
The tournament title is Northwestern's second of the 2007-08 season after also capturing its own Windon Memorial title Oct. 7-8.
Three different Wildcats carded a round under par Saturday. Freshman Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) fired a 1-under 69 in the second round to give him a tournament total of 2-over 142, good for seventh place. Sophomore Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) also had a 1-under 69 in the second round, which he combined with a 75 in the first to finish 12th overall with a 4-over 144.
Senior Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) went 74-71 to finish 17th with a 5-over 145. Senior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) ended up just outside of the top 20, going 73-74 to record a 7-over 147 and finish in 23rd position.
