EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern travels to East Lansing, Mich., April 25-27 for the 89th Big Ten Men's Golf Championships hosted by Michigan State at the par-72, 7,013 yard Forest Akers West Course. The Wildcats, who have a tremendous amount of successful recent history in the event, have finished in the top four in the event in nine of the past 11 years. Overall, Northwestern has won eight Big Ten titles in program history.
Northwestern has the ability to be a very deep squad when all golfers' games are on: the Wildcats' top four golfers on the year have combined for 10 top-10 finishes and eight more top-20 finishes this season, with sophomore David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) earning the first tournament victory of his career three weeks ago at the Notre Dame Spring Invitational. Both of Northwestern's seniors -- Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) and Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) -- have third-place finishes to their name this year.
The 2008 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships will be 72 holes of championship play. Teams will play two rounds Friday, April 25, before one round each on Saturday and Sunday. Scoring for the event will be five players with the lowest four scores counting toward the team score. The Big Ten Network will televise a recap of the tournament on May 14 at 7 p.m. CT.
Since Pat Goss took over as Northwestern's head coach in 1996, the Wildcats have been the Big Ten's best and most consistent program. In his first 11 years as Northwestern's head coach, Goss has led the Wildcats to top-four finishes in nine Big Ten Championships, including winning four titles (1999, 2000, 2001, 2006). NU also has earned one second-place finish (1997), two third-place finishes (1998, 2005) and two fourth-place finishes (2002, 2003).
Northwestern has won more team and individual Big Ten Championships during the 11 years Goss has been with the Wildcats than any other school in the conference. In fact, only twice has NU failed to finish among the top four in the conference in the last 11 seasons.
