SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Behind a final round 1-over 71 by senior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto), Northwestern climbed one place in tough conditions during Thursday's final round to finish fifth at the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
Moore's third-place finish was his third top-three result in his career. He entered Thursday's final round tied for 10th place, then climbed seven places with the day's second-best individual round, helped by four birdies in a five-hole stretch from No. 15 back to No. 1. Moore ended up with a 7-over 217 for the tournament.
As a team, Northwestern fired a 54-hole total of 53-over 893, two shots better than No. 23 Texas Tech in sixth place. St. Mary's (Calif.) won the tournament with a 40-over 880.
Freshman Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) tied for 21st place in the tournament with a 14-over 224 (74-74-76). Sophomore David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) tied for 36th place overall with a three-round total of 18-over 228 (79-72-77).
Rounding out Northwestern's scorers was senior Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek), who fired NU's best round of the tournament with a 1-under 69 before carding two rounds in the 80's to finish 57th with a 22-over 232.
Freshman Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) carded a 26-over 236 for NU.
The course played extremely tough during the two days, especially in Thursday's final round. Only one player in the field shot under par Thursday, while No. 25 Michigan State, which entered the final round with a team score of just 7-over after 36 holes, shot a collective 34-over par on Thursday.
