SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) are tied for 10th in the individual standings, while Northwestern sits in ninth in the team race after Monday's opening round at the CordeValle Collegiate.
With the Wildcats teeing off from No. 10, Lipsky began with two birdies on the backside en route to six total for his round. A triple-bogey on the par-3 second hole, however, helped put him at even-par 72 for the day. Chun had a more consistent round, carding two birdies and two bogeys on both the front and back nines to comprise his round of even-par 72.
Junior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and sophomore Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) both are tied for 58th after opening round totals of 7-over 79. Senior Andy DeKeuster (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) and junior Matt Denison (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) also matched each other's scores, finishing day one in a 63rd-place tie at 8-over 80.
The CordeValle Collegiate is unique in that instead of four scores counting from five total participants per school, five scores are taken from six entrants per program. As a team, Northwestern carded a 22-over 382 and is in eight strokes behind Lamar and UCLA, which both are tied for seventh position within four strokes of the top-3. NU leads 10th-place Arizona by four shots.
