WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Playing in its first Midwest tournament this spring, Northwestern is sitting in third place after one round of the Boilermaker Invitational, which is being held on the Kampen Course of Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The Wildcats are at 308 (20-over), eight strokes behind the host Boilermakers (300), and seven back of second-place Michigan State (301).
Due to the frigid winter-like temperatures, the first day of the tournament was shortened from 36 to 18 holes. The teams will play just one round on Sunday (10 a.m. shotgun start).
Junior Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) paced the 'Cats on Saturday, shooting a highly respectable 4-over 76 on a difficult weather day. He is in 13th place.
Seniors Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) are in 21st place at 5-over (77). Wilson is gunning for his fifth top-20 finish in six tournaments. Junior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) shot a 6-over 78 and is in 28th place.
Freshman Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) fired a 9-over 81 and is in 58th place.
Michigan State's Ryan Brehm leads the field with an even-par 72.
The Wildcats are ranked 37th in latest Golfweek/Sagarin index.
