TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Northwestern, ranked 28th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, closed the Seminole Intercollegiate with a 17-over 305 and finished in a ninth-place tie with 29th-ranked Vanderbilt.
The Wildcats placed ahead of two other top-50 schools: 40th-ranked UCF and 36th-ranked North Carolina State.
Senior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) led the 'Cats with a 3-over 75 and wound up as Northwestern's top finisher with a 4-over 220 (75-70-75), good for 16th place among individuals. It was Wilson's 15th top-20 career finish. East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies, the nation's eighth-ranked player, won the tournament with a 6-under 210 (73-68-69).
Freshman Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), who was three strokes off the lead heading into the final round, carded a 6-over 78 and finished 23rd with a 6-over 222 (73-71-78). Bowers just missed what would have been his fifth top-20 finish of his rookie season.
Senior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) placed 29th with a 7-over 223 (74-73-76) while junior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) was 58th at 12-over (72-76-80=228).
Junior Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) finished 68th and was 19-over (82-77-76=235).
The Wildcats will head to Hilton Head, S.C., for a spring break training trip in a couple weeks, but not resume tournament action until April 2 and 3 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
