EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's golf team is set to face some familiar foes when it travels to the south suburbs on Sunday to begin the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields.
Last weekend the 'Cats traveled to Minnesota for the Gopher Invitational, finishing in seventh place. The sole newcomer to the Wildcat lineup, freshman Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), solidified his place in the lineup by leading the 'Cats with his seventh-place tie (5-over 221).
While last weekend's finish was not as high as the Wildcats wanted, Northwestern posted the second-best team round on the final day (13-over 301) and will look to use this as a springboard for a strong showing against a challenging field this weekend.
The team champion and runner-up at the Gopher Invitational, Stanford and Minnesota, respectively, are also in the Fighting Illini Invitational 12-team field. Defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State and 2006 NCAA Championships participants Arizona State, Duke, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma are also participating.
The host-school Illinois, Purdue and Toledo round out the field.
The Fighting Illini Invitational is being played on Olympia Fields North Course, the same course that hosted the 2003 U.S. Open, which was won by Jim Furyk. The teams play 36 holes Sunday on the 7,205-yard, par-70 layout, with the final 18 taking place Monday.
Live results for the 54-hole invitational can be found at Fighting Illini Invitational.
