ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Playing in its first event of the fall season, Northwestern's men's golf team is off to a solid start, standing fourth among 20 teams after the first two rounds of the 51st Annual William H. Tucker Invitational, which is being hosted by the University of New Mexico. The final 18 holes are set for Saturday.
The Wildcats are 5-over (288-293=581) and trail UNLV (6-under), Texas Tech (1-over) and Colorado (2-over) in the team race.
Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland), who is just weeks removed from his runner-up finish at the U.S. Amateur Championship, is 2-under (68-74=142) and just three strokes back of the leader, Andres Gonzales of UNLV.
Junior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead-Union) fired a 2-under 70 in Friday's second round and jumped from 61st to 17th with a 1-over 145 (75-70). Junior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) is in 25th place at 2-over (74-72=146). Sophomore Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) is 54th at 6-over (73-77=150).
A total of 20 teams, mostly programs from the western half of the United States, are entered in the Tucker Invitational. Six teams -- Arizona, BYU, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV and Texas A&M -- were all NCAA Championships participants in 2005. Five other entrants made the NCAA Regionals.
