RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- Playing in one of the season's most challenging tournaments, Northwestern finished 16th at the Puerto Rico Classic with a 43-over 907 (300-307-300). Eight of the 18 teams in this year's field are currently ranked 19th or higher in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ranking. Five other teams, including the 47th-ranked Wildcats, are top-50 programs.
Third-ranked Georgia Tech held off No. 15 Florida for this year's team championship. Oklahoma State, the country's top-ranked team, placed third. Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares, the 2002 NCAA national champion as a freshman, won his third tournament of the year. Earlier this year, he captured the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge title.
Northwestern's Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) both finished in 60th place with a 10-over 226. David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union), who shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, placed 65th with a 12-over 228 (79-76-73).
Juniors Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) and Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) placed 78th and 87th, respectively.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday, March 24 with a dual meet vs. Illinois in Hilton Head, S.C.
