EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Northwestern's men's golf team is sitting in ninth place after two rounds of the Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational, being held at Michigan State's Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Wildcats, who are ranked 42nd nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, are 24 strokes behind Indiana, the leader heading into Sunday's final round.
The tournament field had to battle cool and windy conditions for the first round before rain settled in for much of the second round. Minnesota, the top-ranked team in the 14-team tourney, is in fourth place, six strokes off the lead. Toledo, the defending co-champion, and Illinois are in second and third place, respectively.
Northwestern, which is being led by freshman David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union), started the day with a 19-over 307 before rebounding somewhat with a 12-over 300 on the final 18 holes.
Merkow is tied for 17th place after carding a 5-over 149 (75-74). Junior Dillon Dougherty is two strokes back at 7-over (76-75=151). He is tied for 26th place.
Northwestern's three seniors -- Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird), T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) and Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) -- are in 34th, 49th and 56th place, respectively. Johnson, NU's stroke leader, is 12-over (79-77=156) after 36 holes. Strunk rebounded from a first-round 78 and shot a 2-over 74 to jump to 34th place (78-74=152). Ford is 11-over (78-77=155).
The final round begins Sunday morning.
