WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Senior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo), who was atop the Boilermaker Invitational leaderboard after two rounds, fired 2-over 74 on Sunday and finished third for his fourth top-five finish this year. As a team, the 41st-ranked Wildcats placed sixth, the same position they held after Saturday's two rounds.
The host Boilermakers held on to win the tournament, despite a late charge from the 35th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes. Purdue won the tourney by two strokes. The respective third-, fourth- and fifth-place finishers were 24th-ranked Kentucky, ninth-ranked TCU and 44th-ranked Indiana. Northwestern did finish in front of fifth-ranked Oklahoma State, 18th-ranked Oklahoma, 33rd-ranked Kansas State, as well Big Ten schools Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa and Wisconsin.
Colorado's Kane Webber fired a 6-under 66 -- the best round of the tournament -- to win the individual title by three strokes (10-under) over Indiana's Jeff Overton. Johnson finished in a three-way tie (69-69-74=212) for third place with Kentucky's John Holmes and Purdue's Shiv Kapur.
Senior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) turned in his best finish of the spring, placing 21st (73-71-75=219) at 3-over. Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) finished 52nd (11-over) after shooting an 8-over 80 on Sunday. He fired rounds of 73 and 74 on Saturday.
Senior T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) and freshman David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) placed 60th and 69th, respectively. Ford finished 13-over (77-74-78=229) while Merkow was 16-over (78-79-75=232).
Northwestern returns to action next week (April 17-18) at Ohio State's Kepler Intercollegiate.
