WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. --- With 18 holes to play in Purdue's Boilermaker Invitational, Northwestern's Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) leads the field after firing back-to-back rounds of 69 on Saturday at the par-72, 7,035-yard course. Johnson holds a one-stroke lead over Indiana's Jeff Overton, who is 5-under after 36 holes.
As a team, Northwestern is in sixth place at 4-over (292-288=580), 18 strokes behind the host Boilermakers. NU, however, is just nine strokes behind second-place Kentucky, which is 5-under (291-280=571).
Johnson, who is coming off a disappointing 40th-place finish at the Furman Invitational, fired rounds of 69 and 69 to vault to the lead at this week's event.
Senior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) is in 19th place after firing rounds of 73 and 71 for an even-par 144.
Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) is in 30th place at 3-over (73-74=147).
The Wildcats return to action Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
