SAN JUAN, P.R. -- Northwestern's 25th-ranked Wildcats finished Tuesday where they started -- in 15th place at the Puerto Rico Classic. Tuesday's action was played on the Rio Mar Country Club River Course.
Northwestern, playing in a field that included several of the nation's top teams, shot a 15-over 303 on Tuesday to finish at 37-over (306-292-303=901). The Wildcats placed ahead of 22nd-ranked Duke, as well as Big Ten foes Illinois (#21) and Michigan. Top-ranked Florida edged second-ranked Clemson by a stroke for the team title when Clemson's Matt Hendrix, the tourney's individual medalist, double bogeyed his final hole.
Northwestern senior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) tallied a 4-over 76 on the final round to close at 1-over (72-69-76=217). He finished 15th.
Senior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) shot the Wildcats' best round on Tuesday, a 1-over 73 to finish 46th at 8-over (77-74-73=224). Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) equaled Strunk's finish (8-over) after he carded a 4-over 76 for the final round (76-72-76=224).
Sophomore Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) and freshman Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) both finished 84th at 22-over. Young had rounds of 83-77-78=238 while Wilson was 81-77-80=238.
The Wildcats now take a month-long break before returning to action March 26 at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
