SAN JUAN, P.R. -- Northwestern's 26th-ranked men's golf team is in 16th place after the first 18 holes of the Puerto Rico Classic, which was played on the River Course at Rio Mar's Country Club. The Wildcats (306) are tied with Illinois, 25 strokes behind second-ranked Clemson, the tourney leader.
Senior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) fired a 37 and a 35 on the front and back nines for an even-par 72. He is tied for 15th place, six strokes back of Texas' Jason Hartwick, another Sacramento area native. Hartwick won the Mercedes-Benz championship two weeks ago.
Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) is in 56th place after shooting a 4-over 76. Senior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) is at 5-over (77) and in 66th place.
Freshman Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) shot a 9-over 81 and is 80th place while sophomore Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) is 11-over (83) and in the 88th spot.
"Tom continues to play pretty well, but we need some of our other guys to step up," said head coach Pat Goss.
Second-round play continues Monday, with the teams playing Rio Mar's Ocean Course.
