St. Andrews, SCOTLAND -- Fresh off helping Europe to a Ryder Cup win, Luke Donald returned to competition Thursday, teaming with fellow Northwestern alum and University benefactor Eric Gleacher at the Dunhill Links Championship.
Dunhill Links, the European Tour's biggest Pro-Am, features 168 teams consisting of one professional and one amateur. The 172-hole event is being played over three of Scotland's best link courses, St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns and features $5,000,000 in total prize money.
After the first round, Donald sits in sixth place in the professional competition, run concurrently with the team competition. Donald's score of 66 puts him two strokes ahead of the world's top two players, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els, but two strokes behind current leader Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland.
Team results are not totaled until October 10, the final day of competition.
