MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Northwestern will have to wait another year for its chance to return to the NCAA National Championships, falling short of a national tournament berth by 13 strokes Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional Championships at the Colbert Hills Golf Course.

In the end, it was the Wildcats' rough second round -- a 20-over 308 -- which cost them a chance to advance to nationals. In the first and third rounds, Northwestern posted competitive team scores of 1-under (287) and 1-over (289).

Senior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) made a run at earning an at-large berth into nationals, but he fell three strokes short of qualifying. Houston's Brett Callas, the Central Regional medalist, and Lamar's Chris Stroud, earned the region's two at-large invitations. Widerstedt, playing his final round as a Wildcat, shot a 1-under 71 to finish with a 3-under 213 (69-73-71) for the tournament. He placed 14th overall.

NU's other senior, Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), also turned in a 1-under 71 on Saturday, and finished 85th at 8-over (76-77-71=224).

Junior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) carded a 1-over 73 Saturday and placed 48th overall with a 4-over 220 (71-76-73).

Oklahoma State, which is hosting the National Championships later this month, came from behind to edge Illinois for the team title. Minnesota, the defending Big Ten and national champion, placed seventh. The top 10 teams advance to the national finals.
