MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Northwestern's 27th-ranked Wildcats are in the hunt for an NCAA national championships berth after shooting a 1-under 287 in Thursday's Central Regional first round. NU is tied for 11th place, one stroke behind 10th-place Arkansas. The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA National Championships, being held at Oklahoma State later this month.

Northwestern is tied with defending national champion Minnesota, host Kansas State and TCU at 1-under. Illinois, which won the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago, is leading the regional field at 13-under. SMU is in second place at 11-under.

Senior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) paced the 'Cats on Thursday, posting five birdies, 11 pars and two bogeys. He is tied for 14th place.

Two strokes behind Widerstedt are NU juniors Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) and Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird), who are tied for 30th place at 1-under.

Senior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) is at 4-over, in 111th place, and T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) is at 6-over, in 132nd place.

The second round is slated for Friday.
