Tom Johnson Finishes Third at Fossum; Wildcats Place Seventh

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo), Northwestern's top-ranked golfer, fired a 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish third at the Bruce Fossum/Spartan Invitational. For the tournament, Johnson carded a 5-under 211 (68-74-69).
As a team, the Wildcats placed seventh, 18 strokes behind Kent State and Illinois, which shared this year's team championship. The Golden Flashes and Fighting Illini finished at even par (864).
NU seniors Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) placed a respective 20th and 25th overall. Harrington finished 5-over (73-72-76=221), while Widerstedt was 7-over (76-74-73=223). Junior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) landed in the 39th spot at 12-over (76-77-75=228), while freshman Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) was 62nd (79-80-75=234).
Next up for Northwestern is the 2003 Big Ten Championships, being hosted by Indiana University. The first and second rounds are scheduled for this Friday, May 2. Northwestern has won three of the last four Big Ten crowns.
