RIO MAR, P.R. -- Playing in one of the nation's elite tournaments, 13th-ranked Northwestern placed ninth at the Puerto Rico Classic after shooting 299 (+11) in Tuesday's final round.
Eight of the nation's top 15 programs were participating in this year's event. The Wildcats finished 32-over (300-297-299=896). Oklahoma State won the tournament, shooting 2-under for the three rounds.
Senior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) turned in one of his top career performances, shooting 4-over (73-74-73=220) for the three days. He finished 20th. Junior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) placed 35th, firing a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish 8-over (77-72-75=224).
Freshman Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) finished a stroke behind Johnson and in 41st place at 9-over (78-73-74=225). Senior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and junior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) rounded out the Wildcats' lineup, and placed 61st and 67th, respectively. Harrington was 16-over (75-78-79=232), while Strunk was 18-over (75-82-77=234).
The Wildcats take a two-week break before returning to action Monday and Tuesday, March 10-11 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
