Widerstedt Advances to Second Round at Public Links Championship

Evanston, Ill. - Northwestern golfer Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Flagler College) competed in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship July 15-18, reaching the second round of the match play portion of the tournament before falling 2 up to Brent Wanner.

Widerstedt opened the week with a 3-under-par 69 during the first qualifying round. He followed that with a 1-over-par round of 73. His two-round total of 142 tied for the 23rd-best qualifying performance and gave Widerstedt a berth in the 64-player match play round.

In the first round of match play July 17, Widerstedt defeated Kevin Warrick 2 and 1. He then lost a close match to Wanner in the round of 32.

The 2002 Public Links Championship was held at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Mich. 19-year-old Ryan Moore won the tournament and earned an exemption to the 2003 Masters.

Widerstedt played 34 rounds in his first season in the Wildcat lineup, finishing the 2001-02 campaign second on the team with a 74.88 stroke average.
